The "Tiltaltti" (Chiffchaff) No. 5 throw is a key piece in Marjatta Metsovaara's bird-inspired series, characterized by its bold use of "exotic" color combinations and a specialized material finish.
Meaning and Expression
With the "Tiltaltti" design, Marjatta Metsovaara sought to express:
• The Energy of the Chiffchaff: Named after the Tiltaltti bird, the design uses rhythmic, varying vertical stripes to capture the bird's "fast-paced aesthetics" and quick movements in nature.
• A Masterful Rule of Color: Metsovaara famously stated that "no color was ugly"—only that combinations could be good or bad. This throw showcases her preference for "exotic aniline red" influences and her signature "green-green" (greener than grass), used here to create a glowing, high-contrast effect.
• The "Blossoming" Effect: Originally made with a high-mohair blend, these blankets used a carded felt surface to reflect light richly. This caused the colors to appear to "blossom" rather than lay flat, mimicking the vibrant, shifting light found on bird feathers.
Superiority of the 140x240cm Size
Upgrading from the original 120x180cm to the new 140x240cm size offers several significant benefits:
• Architectural Scale: Metsovaara’s textiles were designed to complement the large glass surfaces and open floor plans of Mid-Century modern architecture. The larger size allows the design to command a room as a "statement" piece rather than a small accent.
• Increased Versatility: While the original size was a personal lap throw, the 240cm length allows the blanket to serve as a full bed-top coverlet or a dramatic drape for larger modern sofas.
• Enhanced Visual Impact: The expanded canvas gives the complex color rhythms and the "blossoming" texture more room to breathe, making the artistic vision more immersive.
Today, Metsovaara seeks to produce this fine fabric on slow-speed power looms with a distinctly hand-crafted appeal. This beautiful mohair and wool throw, featuring the signature Metsovaara fringes at the ends, will keep you warm this winter. At newly built state-of-the-art combing and spinning facilities, these natural fibers are transformed into unique variations of yarns.
