The Tiira (Tern) designed by Marjatta Metsovaara, is a classic piece from the celebrated bird-inspired series, characterized by its sophisticated use of light and nature-driven color palettes.
The Spirit of the Tern:
This bird is known for its grace and presence near water. The design captures the bird's coastal habitat through a palette of water-adjacent colors-whites, greens, and earthy greys.
Blossoming Through Texture:
Metsovaara used a specific ratio of more mohair than wool to create a carded felt surface. This unique material construction was intended to reflect the light richly, causing the colors to appear to blossom rather than lay flat, mimicking the iridescent quality of feathers.
Rhythmic Movement:
The central band of thin, repeating stripes represents the fast-paced aesthetics of nature, reflecting the rhythmic movement of a bird in flight or the play of light on water.
Modern Interior Harmony:
Metsovaara believed that "no color was ugly", only that combinations could be good or bad. This design was created to be a highly functional yet glorious statement piece that could easily integrate into the large window surfaces and open plans of Mid-Century modern architecture. These blankets were handwoven by 80 weavers in Urjalankylä, Finland, to prove that traditional Finnish weaving could be a bold, high-end international design statement.
Iconic Quality, Modern Durability
We have stayed true to Metsovaara’s original vision, while enhancing the throw for 21st-century living:
• The Original Feel: Just like the 1960s classic, the new Tiira features a substantial 280 g/m² weight, providing that same authentic warmth and comforting drape.
• Improved for Every Day: While the original required delicate care, our new version is engineered for water wash. The color depth remains as rich as the original 1960s dye lots. It offers the premium feel of a collector's piece with the durability needed for a busy, modern household. The larger surface of 140x240cm vs the original 120x180cm allows the masterful rule of colors and the blossoming mohair texture to make a more significant visual impact in a room.
Experience a piece of Finnish design history that is as practical as it is beautiful. Today, Metsovaara seeks to produce this fine fabric on slow-speed power looms with a distinctly hand-crafted appeal. This beautiful mohair and wool throw, featuring the signature Metsovaara knotted fringes at the ends, will keep you warm this winter. At newly built state-of-the-art combing and spinning facilities, these natural fibers are transformed into unique variations of yarns.
