The Riekko (Willow Grouse) throw blanket by Marjatta Metsovaara is part of her celebrated "Bird Series," designed during the mid-20th century to revolutionize the use of color and texture in home textiles.
The Spirit of the Willow Grouse:
This bird is known for its seasonal color changes. The design captures the bird's plumage as it transitions between summer earth tones and winter whites, reflecting the rugged beauty of the Nordic wilderness.
Blossoming Through Light:
Metsovaara used a specific ratio of more mohair than wool. By carding the felt surface, she ensured the material would reflect the light richly, causing the colors to appear to blossom or glow rather than looking flat.
Rhythmic Movement:
The vertical, varying-width stripes are intended to represent the rhythmic movement and fast-paced aesthetics of nature.
A Statement of Craftsmanship:
These blankets were handwoven by 80 weavers in Urjalankylä, Finland, to prove that traditional Finnish weaving could be a bold, high-end international design statement.
Iconic Quality, Modern Durability
We have stayed true to Metsovaara’s original vision, while enhancing the throw for 21st-century living:
• The Original Feel: Just like the 1960s classic, the new Riekko features a substantial 280 g/m² weight, providing that same authentic warmth and comforting drape.
• Improved for Every Day: While the original required delicate care, our new version is engineered for water wash. The color depth remains as rich as the original 1960s dye lots. It offers the premium feel of a collector's piece with the durability needed for a busy, modern household. The larger surface of 140x240cm vs the original 120x180cm allows the masterful rule of colors and the blossoming mohair texture to make a more significant visual impact in a room.
Experience a piece of Finnish design history that is as practical as it is beautiful. Today, Metsovaara seeks to produce this fine fabric on slow-speed power looms with a distinctly hand-crafted appeal. This beautiful mohair and wool throw, featuring the signature Metsovaara knotted fringes at the ends, will keep you warm this winter. At newly built state-of-the-art combing and spinning facilities, these natural fibers are transformed into unique variations of yarns.
