In the "Pelikaani" design, Metsovaara intended to express:
• Exoticism and Energy: Metsovaara was heavily influenced by her travels, often incorporating what she called "exotic aniline red" tones into her work. The Pelican design expresses the tropical, bold nature of the bird through these intense, warm hues.
• The Mastery of Color Harmony: She lived by the principle that "no color was ugly," only that the strength of the combination mattered. This design specifically demonstrates how clashing warm tones (pink, orange, and gold) can be harmonized to create a "glowing" effect.
• Visual Rhythm: Much like the rest of the bird series, the varying widths of the vertical stripes are meant to capture the rhythmic, fast-paced movement found in nature.
