In the 1960 US catalog, Marjatta Metsovaara’s Nona-Nona travel rug from 1958 was presented in a striking palette of blue, turquoise, and violet. The name Nona-Nona was a personal tribute to the daughter of the famous glass designer Nanny Still. Marjatta Metsovaara and Nanny Still were lifelong friends and classmates at the Helsinki Institute of Industrial Arts. Their friendship was a cornerstone of the Finnish "Golden Age" of design. The design features a soft, brushed surface with a subtle plaid or "windowpane" pattern. The colors blend into one another due to the long fibers of the mohair, creating a luminous, painterly effect.
Expression and Intent:
Metsovaara’s work, particularly during the 1960s, was driven by several core artistic and functional goals:
• The "Joy of Color": She famously stated that "no color was ugly" and sought to express the vibrancy of the modern era. She wanted to bring a sense of warmth and luxury into the home, countering the "cold" or clinical feel sometimes associated with modern architecture.
• Nature and "Northerness": Her color choices often reflected the Finnish landscape—in this case, the cool, layered tones of Nordic water and winter light.
• Material Innovation: She wanted to express the unique qualities of mohair, emphasizing its ability to hold vivid dyes and its distinct, fluffy texture, which she described as a "crown" for interior design.
A More Luxurious Version:
As you noted, the design can be elevated into an even more premium product. To create a more luxurious version today, the following adjustments are often made:
• Increased Mohair Content: Using a higher percentage of mohair creates better and lasting yarn dyes, a softer, silkier sheen, and a deeper "pile" that feels lighter yet warmer than standard wool.
• Larger Dimensions: Increasing the size to a full "throw" or bed-blanket scale (e.g., 140x240 cm) allows for a more dramatic display of the pattern and a more "enveloping" feel.
• Lighter Weave: By using specialized slow-speed looms, the fabric can be woven to be exceptionally airy and lightweight, ensuring the blanket provides high insulation without feeling heavy or stiff.
This beautiful throw blanket, finished with Metsovaara’s signature knotted fringes, offers you sensory immersion, silk-like luster, weightless warmth, and an elegant drape that enhances both modern and generously proportioned living spaces. At newly built state-of-the-art combing and spinning facilities, these natural fibers are transformed into unique variations of yarns. Woven in the original Nona-Nona pattern from 1958, the fabric is brushed to create a classic, fluffy form. All this means that a throw blanket from Metsovaara not only adorns any room but also provides high comfort and a genuine sense of craftsmanship and heritage.
With today’s improved production methods, the material is more reliable and resistant to washing.
