The "Nana" travel rug, originally designed by Marjatta Metsovaara in the late 1950s, is a striking example of her "bird series" and is currently being reproduced with modern technical enhancements. Nana is part of the scientific name for several birds, most notably the Asian Desert Warbler (Curruca nana). In Finnish, this bird is known as kääpiökerttu. Additionally, the Olive-throated Parakeet bears the scientific name Eupsittula nana. While many of her other designs use common Finnish bird names (like Satakieli or Tintti), "Nana" likely appealed to her because of its elegant, rhythmic sound and its connection to these smaller, delicate bird species.
Advantages of the Modern Production:
The decision to produce these rugs in a larger 140x240cm format using advanced slow-speed power looms offers several functional and architectural advantages:
• Architectural Scale: The 140x240cm size transitions the piece from a simple lap blanket to a significant architectural element, suitable for the large glass surfaces and open spaces of modern interiors.
• Enhanced Mohair Content: By using a high-mohair blend (typically 72% mohair and 28% wool), the rug achieves a unique "blossoming" effect. This creates a richer reflection of light and a more lustrous finish compared to standard wool blends.
• Lighter Weight and Hand-Crafted Feel: Slow-speed machine weaving allows for a lighter, more delicate construction that retains the "hand-crafted appeal" of Metsovaara’s original 1950s hand-woven blankets while meeting modern luxury demands for comfort.
Visual Movement:
The larger surface area allows the pattern’s rhythm and the fiber’s natural "glow" to be more visible, making the rug a central design statement rather than just an accessory.
Today, we seek to produce this fine fabric on slow-speed power looms with a distinctly hand-crafted appeal. This beautiful mohair and wool travel rug with fringes at the ends will keep you warm this winter. At newly built state-of-the-art combing and spinning facilities, these natural fibers are transformed into unique variations of yarns. Woven in the original Nana pattern and sensational colors, the fabric is brushed to create a classic, fluffy form. All this means that a travel rug from Metsovaara not only adorns any room but also provides high comfort and a genuine sense of craftsmanship and heritage.
With today's improved production methods, the throw is more reliable and resistant to washing.
