Mohair is the epitome of luxury, and this beautiful design of Marjatta Metsovaara from the 1950s is a statement.

By naming the design Lukki (harvestman, the long-legged, spider-like arachnid), Marjatta Metsovaara was playing with organic geometry.

1. Biological Architecture: The design mimics the delicate but strong proportions of the harvestman. She wanted to express how thin, "leggy" lines could create a stable and sophisticated structure. The grid isn't just a pattern; it's a "web" of fine intersections.
2. Structural Minimalism: While her other designs, like Polska (fields) or Masurkka (dance) were about broad themes, Lukki was an exercise in precision. It expressed the beauty found in the skeletal and the linear—perfectly matching the minimalist, "clean line" furniture of the 1950s.
3. Masculine vs. Feminine Balance: Lukki is often seen as one of her more "architectural" or "masculine" designs. In the neutral brown and grey palette, she wanted to express a quiet strength that felt grounded and orderly rather than purely decorative.
4. The "Room Divider" Effect: Metsovaara viewed her larger textiles as elements that could define a space. The bold, high-contrast check of Lukki was intended to ground a room, providing a stable, rhythmic foundation that didn't compete with colorful art or furniture, but rather framed it.
5. Technical Versatility: As a skilled textile engineer, she designed the rug to be functional and durable.

The original 135 × 180 cm size was designed as a travel rug, woven from 40% mohair and 60% wool, and was produced from the 1950s to 1973.

The new intent is a 140x240cm throw blanket with 72%mohair and 28% wool:
Furniture has grown significantly since the 1950s. At 240cm, the blanket can properly drape across a 3-seater sofa or serve as a luxurious "bed runner" that covers the full width of a large bed. The extra 60cm length ensures that an individual can be fully covered from neck to lower legs, addressing a common critique of vintage "travel" rugs.

Enhanced Material Luxury:
Revered as the “Diamond Fiber,” mohair stands among the most precious natural fibers in the world. In this exceptional composition—72% mohair and 28% wool—the textile is woven on slow-speed power looms, allowing time, precision, and a distinctly hand-crafted character to define every piece.
Mohair fabrics offer weightless warmth because mohair fibers contain unique air pockets. By increasing the mohair-to-wool ratio to a maximum, you create a blanket that is significantly warmer yet feels lighter on the body than the original 1950s version. When it comes to durability and resilience, mohair is naturally more elastic and resistant to pilling than wool. A larger surface area of 140x240cm benefits from this strength, ensuring this blanket maintains its shape and "loft" over time despite its increased size.

This beautiful throw blanket, finished with Metsovaara’s signature knotted fringes, offers you sensory immersion, silk-like luster, weightless warmth, and an elegant drape that enhances both modern and generously proportioned living spaces. At newly built state-of-the-art combing and spinning facilities, these natural fibers are transformed into unique variations of yarns. Woven in the original Lukki pattern from the 1950s, the fabric is brushed to create a classic, fluffy form. All this means that a throw blanket from Metsovaara not only adorns any room but also provides high comfort and a genuine sense of craftsmanship and heritage.

With today’s improved production methods, the material is more reliable and resistant to washing.
