Through the "Kolibri" design, Metsovaara sought to express several core artistic principles:
• The Energy of the Hummingbird: The name "Kolibri" refers to the hummingbird. The design expresses its "fast-paced aesthetics" and rhythmic movement through the use of thin, varying vertical stripes and contrasting bold color blocks.
• A Masterful Rule of Color: Metsovaara believed that "no color was ugly" and that the beauty of a textile lay in the strength and balance of the combination. This design showcases her "designer image" by pairing "exotic aniline red" influences with her signature "green-green" (a green greener than grass) to create a glowing effect.
• The "Blossoming" Effect: These blankets featured a carded felt surface designed to reflect light richly. This technical choice caused the colors to "blossom" rather than appear flat, mimicking the way light hits real bird feathers.
• Modernizing Home Interiors: Metsovaara’s work played a major role in the modernization of Finnish home interior design, intended to be both a technical masterpiece and a bold international "statement" piece.

Material and Size Refinement:
Originally produced in 120 × 180 cm, the new edition is expanded to a generous 140 × 240 cm. This increased scale enhances the sense of luxury and allows Metsovaara’s intricate color compositions to unfold across a broader surface—perfectly suited to the light-filled, open interiors her textiles were always meant to complement.

Woven in an elevated blend of 72% mohair and 28% wool, the enlarged surface lets the fibers’ natural luster intensify, giving the colors greater depth, vibrancy, and movement. The expanded proportions also enhance the rhythmic flow of the Kolibri and Tiira patterns, creating a more immersive visual experience.

Today, Metsovaara seeks to produce this fine fabric on slow-speed power looms with a distinctly hand-crafted appeal. At newly built state-of-the-art combing and spinning facilities, these natural fibers are transformed into unique variations of yarns.
