The Flamingo travel rug was designed by Marjatta Metsovaara in 1958, and is a landmark piece of mid-century textile art. Its design principles reflect the same architectural precision found in her. The name primarily references the vibrant, exotic color palette that Metsovaara was introducing to Finnish design at the time.

Flamingo Colors:
The rug's characteristic warm tones—terracotta, golden yellow, and pink-toned oranges—were a direct nod to the exotic plumage of the bird.
• Terracotta and Burnt Orange: Evoking warmth and natural earth tones.
• Golden Yellow: Providing a luminous highlight to the pattern.
• Deep Chocolate and Charcoal: Used in the grid-like "architectural" lines to create structure and depth against the lighter shades.
These colors were chosen to shift and blend through the long fibers of the mohair, creating a soft, glowing effect that softened the geometric rigidity of the design.

Design Expression: An "Architectural Masterpiece"
Metsovaara viewed her woven textiles not merely as accessories, but as spatial elements. With the Flamingo rug, she intended to express:
• Warmth in Modernism: She wanted to provide a "human" counterpoint to the large glass and concrete surfaces of modern architecture.
• Functional Art: She aimed to combine "complete functionality and technical certainty" with a "glorious appearance". The rug was meant to be as durable and well-engineered as a building while remaining soft and decorative.
• The Power of Material: By using mohair, she expressed the material's ability to act as a light-reflecting "crown" for an interior, turning a simple blanket into a statement of luxury.

Modern Fulfillment: Large Scale and High Mohair
A new production of the Flamingo design with a larger surface area and higher mohair content meets modern interior needs in several ways:
• Spatial Balance: In contemporary open-plan homes with large furniture, a larger-scale "throw" or rug acts as a visual anchor, much like an architectural feature.
• Enhanced Tactility: A higher percentage of mohair increases the "fur-like" softness and lightness, providing the tactile luxury that modern consumers seek for comfort.
• Luminous Depth: More mohair allows the vibrant 1958 colors to appear even more bold and impressive, interacting with modern lighting to create a shifting, painterly presence in the room.

This beautiful throw blanket, finished with Metsovaara’s signature knotted fringes, offers you sensory immersion, silk-like luster, weightless warmth, and an elegant drape that enhances both modern and generously proportioned living spaces. At newly built state-of-the-art combing and spinning facilities, these natural fibers are transformed into unique variations of yarns. Woven in the original Flamingo pattern from 1958, the fabric is brushed to create a classic, fluffy form. All this means that a throw blanket from Metsovaara not only adorns any room but also provides high comfort and a genuine sense of craftsmanship and heritage.

With today’s improved production methods, the material is more reliable and resistant to washing.
